KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICE, AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF PROPER BODY MECHANICS AMONG NURSES WORKING IN HOSPITALS IN HARAR CITY, EASTERN ETHIOPIA

KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICE, AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF PROPER BODY MECHANICS AMONG NURSES WORKING IN HOSPITALS IN HARAR CITY, EASTERN ETHIOPIA
Hayat Hussen Mohammed; Aboma Motuma (Ph.D); Shiferaw Letta (Ph.D)
Improper body mechanics during patient care tasks increase the risk of
musculoskeletal disorders among nurses, leading to a high turnover rate and a shift to less
physically demanding roles. Limited information exists about the nurse’s level of knowledge and
application of proper body mechanics and factors that impact practice of proper body mechanics
during patient care tasks in the study setting.
Objective: The study aimed to assess the level of knowledge, practice, and its associated factors
of proper body mechanics among Nurses working in Hospitals in Harar City, Eastern Ethiopia
Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 420 participants, from
August 26 to September 26, 2024. A structured self-administered questionnaire adapted from
relevant literature was used for the data collection. A simple random sampling technique was used
to select study participants. Both descriptive and analytical statistical tests were utilized. Binary
logistic regression was applied. Variables having a p-value of <0.25 in the bi-variable analysis
were included in the multivariable analysis, and variables with a p-value <0.05 were disclosed as
statistically significant with the outcome variable.A total of 416 participants were included in the study, making the response rate of 99%.
The median age of the respondents was 29 years, with an interquartile range from 27-32 years.
Almost half of the participants (50.24%) had good knowledge about body mechanics while only
20.9% (CI=17.1-25.14) of the participants had good practice of proper body mechanics. Marital
status (married) [AOR 0.51(0.27-0.94)], availability of transfer materials [AOR 4.34(1.65-11.39)],
Nurse-to-patient ratio (1:10 or fewer patients) [AOR 2.91(1.08-7.85)], physical activity [AOR
2.46(1.33-4.53), and training on body mechanics [AOR 28.25(4.55-175.25)] were factors
significantly associated with the practice of proper body mechanics among Nurses.
Conclusion: This study revealed that almost half of the participants had good knowledge of body
mechanics, but only one-fifth of the study participants had a good proper body mechanics practice.
Therefore, stakeholders should devise strategies that enhance the knowledge of the nurses, and
implementation of proper body mechanics.

Anticancer drugs account to high susceptibility towards adverse drug reactions due
to their narrow therapeutic window and increased toxicity, which makes pharmacovigilance studies
essential for prevention, diagnosis, reporting and management in current clinical practice.
Objective: To assess the chemotherapy-related adverse drug reactions and associated factors among
adult cancer patients who are on treatment at Hon. Dr. Ali Birra cancer treatment center of Hiwot
Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Eastern Ethiopia from July 10 to August 15, 2024.
Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 adult cancer patients
who are on treatment at Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. All patients on
chemotherapy treatment were included in the study. Data was collected by patient interview and
medical record review. The collected data was cleaned, coded, and entered into using Kobo tool box
and exported to Statistical Package for Social Science version 20.0 for analysis. With Factors
significantly associated were identified using logistic regression model at P-value < 0.05 and
95%CI.From 422 study participants, 251 (59.5%) of them were females. Overall, 48.34% (95%
CI: 43.6 – 53.6) of the included cancer patients developed chemotherapy related adverse drug
reactions. Accordingly, for the Naranjo algorithm, of 2823 ADRs identified, probable account for
2122 (75.17%) followed by definite 508 (18.0%). Based on Hartwig severity assessment scale,
majority ADRs were 2699 (95.87%) moderate. Cancer patients with weight of less than 50kg (AOR
= 3.29, 95% CI: 1.82, 5.94), cancer patients with age range of 31- 40 years (AOR = 0.34% CI: 0.15,
0.74) were more likely associated with adverse drug reactions.
Conclusion: Overall, near to half of the included cancer patients developed ADRs. Having weight
less 50 kg, and cancer patient with age range of 31- 40 years were associated with developing ADR.
Therefore, special attention should be given for cancer patients with those condition so that adverse
drug reactions can be minimized

Prevalence, Treatment Outcome and Associated Factors of Deep Vein Thrombosis Among Patients Visiting Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital, Harar, Eastern Ethiopia, 2024
Amanuel Assefa; Dr. Melaku Getachew; Dr. Natan Muluberhan
Venous thromboembolism is the third common vascular disease after coronary
artery disease and stroke. Which is experienced by 2-5% of people during their lifetime. The
condition occurs in two forms deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The annual rate of
Deep Vein thrombosis urban areas is reported to be 0.5-1.6 in every 1000 people which is probably
much higher in reality due to asymptomatic forms of the disease. Despite the high prevalence of
Deep vein thrombosis in Ethiopia, there is a scarcity of published data on prevalence, factors
contributing for treatment outcome of deep vein thrombosis particularly at Hiwot Fana
comprehensive specialized University Hospital. Therefore this study aimed to assess the
prevalence, treatment outcome and associated factors of deep vein thrombosis among patients
visiting Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital, Harar, Eastern, Ethiopia.
Objective: To determine the prevalence, treatment outcome and associated factors of deep vein
thrombosis among patients visiting Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital
Harar, Ethiopia from June 30, 2020 to June 30, 2024 .The data will be collected from December
20, 2024 to 01, January 20, 2025. Institutional based cross-sectional study will be undertaken among 261 Deep Vein
Thrombosis patients visiting Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized Hospital during the study
period of June 30, 2020 to June, 2024. A total of 261 Deep vein thrombosis patients from this
study period will be reviewed using a structured checklist. Simple random sampling technique will
be used to select patients’ chart. The collected data will be entered in to EpiData Version 3.8 and
exported to statistical package for social science version 25 for analysis. Binary logistic regression
model will be used. All covariate which have P-value less than 0.25 in bivariable analysis will be
entered for multivariable analysis and said to be significantly associated if P-value is less than 0.05
and strength of association will be presented by an adjusted odd ratio with 95% confidence interval.
Expected Outcome: At the end of study high prevalence and good outcome will be expected
among Deep Vein Thrombosis patients visiting Hiwot Fana Comprehensive specialized hospital.
Additionally, the associated factors that significantly related with Deep vein thrombosis outcomes
will be also identified.
Estimated Budget: The budget calculated is 25,000 (twenty-five thousand birr) and it will be
funded by Haramaya University

ACCEPTABILITY OF DONOR BREAST MILK BANKING AND ITS ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS IN PUBLIC HOSPITALS IN HARARI REGIONAL STATE AND DIRE DAWA CITY ADMINISTRATION, EASTERN ETHIOPIA: MIXED METHOD STUDY
Ahmed Abadir Abafogi; Mr. Assefa Desalew; Mr Sagni Girma
A donor breast milk bank is recommended for preterm, low birth weight, and
other infants who cannot feed their mother’s milk. It is an intervention that contributes to the
reduction of neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. Healthcare professionals play a key
role in ensuring the establishment and success of this intervention. However, there is a significant
lack of evidence regarding its acceptability among healthcare professionals in eastern Ethiopia.
Objective: To assess the acceptability of donor breast milk banking and its associated factors
among healthcare professionals in public hospitals in Harari regional state and Dire Dawa City
Administration, Eastern Ethiopia, from August 15-September 13, 2024.
Methods: A mixed-method study (quantitative, cross-sectional, and qualitative) design was
employed. For the quantitative study, a total of 347 healthcare professionals working in maternal
and child health units were enrolled using a simple random sampling technique. Quantitative data
was collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire, entered into Epi-data version
4.6, and analyzed using STATA version 17. Binary logistic regression models were fitted to
identify factors associated with the acceptability of donor breast milk banking. Qualitative data
was collected by in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The proportion of acceptability of donor breast milk banking was 38.62% (95% CI:
33.47, 43.96%). Factors such as having a master’s degree, and medical doctor, adequate
knowledge, a good attitude and having children were significantly associated with breast milk
banks' acceptability. Qualitative insights revealed facilitators such as training and educational
activities, understanding of breast milk benefits, and trust in healthcare systems’ safety protocol,
while barriers were; lack of awareness, cultural and religious concerns, and resource constraints.
Conclusion: The acceptability of breast milk banks among healthcare professionals was
moderate, and influenced by factors such as level of education, knowledge status, attitudes, and
having children. Facilitators were; understanding of the benefits of breast milk, confidence in the
safety protocols, as well as training and educational initiatives; while, lack of awareness, cultural
and religious concerns, and resource constraints were barriers. Targeted educational programs,
awareness campaigns, infrastructural improvements, and further studies are recommended to
enhance the acceptability of breast milk banks
