Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess the practices of continues assessment in teaching
physical education in secondary schools of Lideta sub city, Addis Ababa City
Administration. The schools selected for this study were Dejezamch Balech Aba Nefsol,
Africa Hebert and Hidas Lideta secondary school are (869) (841) and (830) students
respectively. For the execution of the study a descriptive survey design was employed,
which included both quantitative and qualitative approach. The sample 53 from
Dejazmach Balcha Abanefso, 52 from Africa Hibret , 51 students from Hidase Lideta
Secondary School by using simple random sampling and totally 156 were selected by
using Kothair (2004) formula. Additionally, 16 physical education teachers and 3 school
principals were included by using purposive sampling techniques due to their high
attachment with the practice of continues assessment. The data which were collected
through questionnaire were analyzed by using frequency and percentage. The data
gathered through open ended questions, interviews and observation were analyzed
qualitatively through narration for the purpose of triangulation. As the findings of the
study revealed that the basic challenges that affect the practice of continues assessment
are lack of training, lack of support from school principals, lack of materials and
equipment’s ,and also physical education teachers are not well practice continues
assessment effectively. Therefore, this paper recommended that there should be training
of continues assessment; fulfilling necessary material for effective practice of continues
assessment and the school have to support PE teachers for the implementation.
