| dc.description.abstract | This thesis presents “A History of Badanno Woreda from 1941 to 1991.” This thesis examined 
the administrative, economic and socio- cultural development in the Woreda during the imperial 
(1941- 1974) and the Derg (1974- 1991) period. It analyzed the development in the area of 
education, religion and other social issues in the Woreda. The thesis benefitted from archival 
materials, published works, BA and MA thesis, PhD dissertations and also informants. The thesis 
organized in four parts. The first part deals with the general backgrounds of the woreda. It also 
deals with the economy of the Woreda which includes both agriculture and trade. The second 
part deals with the historical background of Eastern Oromo that settled in Hararghe which 
includes Marawa (Itu), Humbanna (Anniya) and Afran Qallo and their settlement patterns, the 
Socio- political organization, the relation of Eastern Oromo with Harari, Egyptian influence and 
the Menelik conquest of Harar and the surrounding Oromo. The third partis devoted to 
historical developments in the Woreda during the imperial era (1941- 1974). It deals with the 
formation of the district, the administration system, economic activity (agriculture, trade, land 
tenure) and socio- cultural life. It also includes the development of infrastructure which includes 
schools and health center. It also discusses the religious history of the Woreda which includes 
Islam and Christianity. The fourth part deals with the changes which happened in the Woreda 
during the Derg regime. It discusses the Ethiopian revolution of 1974, the role of zamach 
students in the Woreda and Land reforms made by the Derg and changes in the Woreda. It also 
treats the background to the Ogaden war and Somali conflict in Badanno. The villagisation 
programme, the activities of OLF in the Woreda and the development of public institution during 
the Derg regime is also examined. | en_US |
