Abstract:
The major Objectives of this study were to investigate practice and challenges of improving 
female student‘s participation in secondary schools of Afder Zone Somali regional state. To 
achieve this descriptive survey method was used. Five schools in number from Zone were the 
selected used convenient sampling method. Questionnaires for female teachers, male teachers, 
PTSA and School Administration, Structured interview form for parents and School
Administration were used as data collection instruments. The study included a total of 62 male 
teachers 12 female teachers, and 58 School Administration and PTSA. In reporting and 
analyzing descriptive statistical techniques such as frequency, percentage, mean, mode, 
medium have been used for data analysis.
The major findings revealed that school related factors such as distance from home to school, 
early marriage, poverty, FGM, socio economic factors, socio cultural factors, lack of female 
teachers in the school that consult female teachers, parents level of education, burden in 
domestic activities etc., all those are negatively affected and become the most challenges to 
improve female students participate in secondary schools.
Thus, researchers recommended that, education officers should assign female teachers in the 
schools to enhance guidance and counseling of female students in secondary schools, 
principals have to organize community awareness sessions in order to remove negative attitude 
of parents toward female education. Education bureau should fulfill school facilities like class 
rooms, separate toilets, library, pedagogy, laboratory, sport field and material, in order schools 
to be suitable for teaching and learning, by allocating enough budgets
